Removing races from hubs

Discussion in 'General Motoring' started by brian lanning, Feb 16, 2004.

  1. I'm getting sick and tired of pounding races out of hubs on my
caravan(s) with a punch and a small sledge. I'm having a real hard
time finding a puller that can remove the races though. Can anyone
suggest a tool with a source and part number that can pull the races
out of these hubs? There's not enough of an edge for my jaw puller to
grab it. How do the pros do it?

I work in a machine shop and we use aluminum slugs that will fit the full
diameter of the lip of the race. We will sometimes pound them out with a
sledge but mostly we use an arbor or hydro press.

  3. I was assuming that they were using a press, i was thinking something
with a screw I could turn with a wrench. I guess what I really need
is a set of those slugs. Maybe with the sides cut off so that I can
pass them through the race, then turn them and seat them against the
lip on the back of the races. The diameter of this piece would need
to be perfect though. I think I may be looking for something called a
    blind bearing puller.
