Misfiring Town and County 3.8L

I have a '03 Town and Country 3.9 liter w/ 50K miles which just started
misfiring. It runs rough, exhaust sputters and smells, and power is
low. But it doesn't stall. Check engine light is on and I've read
codes of P0300 (random misfires) and P1684 ("Driver 5 Line 4" - no idea
what this means). My dealer read the same codes, had no idea about
P1684, and wanted to start by replacing plugs and wires. I'm about to
    do that myself.

    Has anyone had this symptom?

    Its a 3.8 liter

It runs rough, exhaust sputters and smells, and power is
Replace the plugs and wires yourself, that should take care of your
    problem.
The p1684 I believe is related to the SKIM module for your skim key,
possible an invalid or mismatch fault code

P1684 is a battery disconnected fault

seen a alot of the vans do this and there was a tsb that also required a
reflash of the pcm and replacing wires and plugs for 04 that was a late 03
issue and thats covered under emissions warranty and so is misfire codes
because the vehicles fails emissions testing at that point so do your plug
and wire change and then let it misfire somemore

Well I've changed the plugs and wires and they did not solve the
misfiring problem. Still runs rough and smells funny.

philthy: Do you happen to know the TSB # that calls for PCM reflash?

There is no reflash for this model/year, Philthy thinks every TSB pertains
to every vehicle. There is no TSB period

My next step is to swap out the EGR valve. Does this make sense?
It appears to be on the back side of the throttle body just downstream
from the butterfly valve. Is that correct?

    Thanks in advance...

To me it makes no sense at all, first of all EGR would not effect a lack of
power, it may cause rough idle or a slight hesitation.
Why not have someone who knows what they are doing tell you what is wrong
    with the vehicle??

My first move was to take it to the Chrysler dealership - they could
not tell what was wrong and proposed to start by swapping out the plugs
and wires (for $426). Now that I've done that myself (for $80) I'll
probably take it back to the shop. However, if I could find out what
the next parts to be swapped were, and they happen to be easy, I'd do
    that myself also.

Well since you have a cyl misfire fault and you say the exhaust smells I
would assume that it is getting fuel (rules out injector possibly) So I
would think it would be a secondary ignition misfire?
You paid the dealer money and they told you it was a misfire code did you
happen to ask them what cylinder it was?
The scan tool they use will determine what and how many cylinders are
effected to help in diagnosing the problem.
What are you gonna do when you throw everything at it and still don't fix it
because its an internal engine problem such as a valve?
Why not take it to a competent shop?

You cannot reflash a PCM if there is no reflash available!!! When you
connect to Tech tools and show all available updates...if there is no flash
for it how can you flash it???? You keep telling people on here there is a
TSB or a recall out on vehicles that aren't.
The original poster is asking you for the TSB number and you still haven't
answered him because there isn't one.
Is this how you fix cars? shot gun repair?? Misinforming customers??
Take a deep breath the next time you post and read what you type.

no, i quit the dealer so i wouldn't misinform them or throw parts at it like
you do.dealers don't pay techs to properly trouble shoot cars esp. dc techs
    just swap parts
there is a tsb for a misfire and it was early04 and that van inquestion might
or might not fall under that tsb
give me your pass word to dealerconnect and i will find it for u since u can't
seem to and u know as well as i do the most current flash will more than likely
cover that misfire issue too since the pcm part numbers is the tech tool rule
of thumb so it may not show that one tsb now dan you can oh i'm sorry your
name is glenn but have become as arrogant as him that post has come and gone
    and so should you

the more arrogant a man becomes the less he can think

    techs

I understand why they let you go dirty.
    likely

You CANNOT relash a moduel if there is none.

You tell people on her all the time there is a TSB or recall when there isnt

This poster is still waiting for an answer after you told him there is a
reflash. well we are waiting for your reply??

I dunno about anyone else, but I for one am waiting for you to put up,
    or shut up

let me refresh your memory though, in case you're forgotten
if you know there's a TSB, then you should be able to find it, so
    please, back up your claims.

I don't know glenn, beyond here. I've had a few problems, and read
others problems and he's always been clear, concise, and accurate in
his help. For that I thank him. What little i've read of your stuff
(this thread0 seems that you like to say stuff with no proof at all.
All show and no go, lots of pep, lack of poke, all mouth and no
trousers. call it what you will. thats the impression i'm gettng of
    you

I just calling it as i see it Glenn. btw - thet - on a line marks the
start of a sig, so many clients omit what comes after it on a reply.
After your text, not before, k?
