1st symptom ---- odometer Mph and RPM guages work fine but occasionally
when I starte neither one would work --- later they would be fine
    again.

2nd symptom ----- car seems to jump slightly with acceleration
particularly if heavy on the gas

3rd symptom ------ today service engine soon light comes on car is
running sluggish but still car is running but a obvious sluggishness

The oil was clear and at the ight amount transmission fluid looked
moderate not burned but clear and at the right amount The only obvious
thing was a split in the hose from the air filter to engine --- could
that cause the problem?? Will car run if timing belt is broken?? If
transmission is shot would car run how obvious would it be?? from the
belts I could see everything loooked fine.

I would find out what code is stored in the engine contoller before you
attemped any repairs. A plug or plug wire breaking down may cause a voltage
spike and take out the MIC and cause the hesitation problem. OR if the PRNDL
in the cluster is all BOXXED out. There may be codes in the BCM, MIC, and
PCM for a no 'EATX or TCM message'. The transmission may be in LIMP IN, and
possible NO RESPONSE from the TCM.
