What transmission is in these cars? Is it a variant of the A604/41TE
line? I'm curious about this since the motor is mounted
longitudinally, and the final drive, at the very least, is different.

42LE. Yes, it is a derivative of the hairy old A604.

It's called the 42LE, and is an uprated derivative of the 41TE with
chain drive from the transmission section output to a
separately-lubricated hypoid differential for the longitudinal layout.
