Chinese-made cars will not be cheaper than domestics

Discussion in 'General Motoring' started by George Orwell, May 31, 2009.

  1. Think Japanese cars. Toyota Coronas sold for $1800 when intoduced. Once
we got hooked, they jacked up the prices to American levels. The Chinese
will do the same after they wipe out Ford.

Lenin once said, "The Capitalists will sell us the rope with which we will
    hang them".
So true, if GM imports Chinese Chevys.

It is only our politicians that keep us from buying a Tata Nano for $2600.

Detrot doesn't buy my products, why should I buy theirs? It is going to be
a question many are going to ask after GM & Chrysler are bilking the
    taxpayers including myself.

It is why I will not by a auto again that has a GM, Chrysler, GMAC, UAW or
    CAW part in it.

So Chinese and India vehicles have appeal. Bring them on.... and Ford does
    make non-UAW stuff imported....

Pick my pocket, your business can go to hell.

Funny and agreed. If I am on the highway, I take the F150 Lariat. Nice
ride. But agree, small cars are a risk in many cases. Imagine a prarie
winter, -30C, wind gusts to 30kmh or more, blowing snow....

What would you rather be in? Nano, SmartCar, Volt or F150? Know the F150
is a V8, auto, 4x4 with temp control, heated seats and mirrors....

But I would bet if Tata put 200,000 Nano's on the Canadian market for say
$4000, they would be sold in 2 months or less. At that price, I wouldn't
even haggle. Buy one as a city only vehicle. F150 for the highway and
winter, and Nano for fair weather travel to city work.

But if some GM jack ass thinks I am going to buy a fair weather Volt, or
Euro SmartCar for $30,000 and up, they are stark raving nuts. Every October
though March the little crap boxes hibernate around here.

Buy more affordable imports. Hey, you asked? Our economy didn't end when
electronics, textiles, clothing etc. went offshore. It is just time that
auto did the same so we can aford to buy them. With taxes up, expenses up,
wages down, job insecurity and national credit sub-zero, people are not
going to pay CAW/UAW prices any more.

And people like me, will not patronize the taxpayer pocket pickers. They
can go away. And the GM wankers can go find jobs like the 99% of the others
who got laid off without a bailout.

    It's simple economics.
If the Chinese build all our cars they will want higher pay, to bring
their standard of living up to ours. Add the transportation and the
handling charges on top, and give GM (or whoever imports them) their
profit, and within a few years it will be cheaper to build CHINESE
vehicles in North America than in China, just like it is now cheaper
to build Toyota and Honda cars for North American consumption in North
America than to build them in Japan.

In that respect the market IS self regulating.

This is where I dissagree with you. Our economy DID die when
electronics, textiles, clothing etc went offshore. Because of the
screwed up way our financial system works, and the stock market, it
just took a little while for the corpses to drop.
Now that the corpses have fallen over we finally REALIZE that our
    economy is sick/dying/dead.
And just what are you/ the rest of North Americans going to do to earn
the money to buy the Tatra Nano or whatever other ultra-cheap imported
products you say we should be able to buy? Sell hamburgers at
Harveys/White Castle/etc? Be greeters at Walmart? Sell coffee at
    Starbucks?

Who's going to have money to buy starbucks coffee if everyone is
working at minimum wage and the country has no gross national
    product????
When the GM workers all hit the job market, competition for those jobs
at Starbucks and Walmart is going to get AWFUL stiff.

In a true free market though, you would have the option of buying cheap
    junk if you so desired...

you could ask the question, which is safer and more reliable, a new Nano
or a typical $2600 used car. Unless you're real savvy and have a full
set of tools the answer might actually be the Nano.

None of the above. My ideal ride for those conditions would be some
sort of Audi or Subaru. Of vehicles that I own, probably my Porsche
944, so long as the snow isn't too deep. yes I have snow tires for it
and it's an animal in snow. Yes I also have an F-150 and I don't
understand why people feel safer in such an oversized, ill-handling
machine. It's good for hauling stuff, but when I don't need to haul
anything I much prefer being in a proper car.

Too bad AMC bit it all those years ago, and it's especially a shame that
they didn't develop the Eagle concept better. If they'd put out a
performance version they "coulda been a contender" because remember that
was just about the same time that Audi was flat out rocking the rally
world with the Ur-Quattro. (speaking of which, the girlie was wearing a
Pike's Peak T-shirt yesterday. It's odd enough to see her wearing
something automotive related that I noticed it... I guess she thinks
Michele Mouton was cool or something. Well, she was...) Could you see
a little hatchback Eagle with a tweaked up motor and 5-speed going at it
against the Quattros? What could have been... And wouldn't it have
been nice to have an AWD passenger car option that wasn't either finicky
and expen$ive like those old Audis all were or else on the small side
like the old Subarus? Of course now the Scoobys are a decent size so
    that's academic.

  20. Actually, not necesarily for the time being. I gather (not from here) that
the Nano is still poor for safety, though that may change in future (with
    its price going up).

Furthermore, my 1993 Merc 190E has a market value of somewhere between zero
and scrap, but I bet it's still a safer bet than a Tata Nano.

It is also interesting to note that the export version of the Nano will have
    more features.
