You really want to use the Mopar-recommended sealant. Some people have
reported success with aftermarket brand stuff (got your ears on, Steve?) but
all in all, the $14 is well worth it, and one tube will do the job for
    several changes.

On the other hand, there is a TSB out there for a *steel* pan gasket
available by special order at the dealer. You don't have to use any sealant
with this one. It's pricey at around $30, but it's reusable three times,
and once you go through the pain of cleaning the old RTV goop off the first
time, it makes the job much easier and quicker the second and third. I just
put one on my 42LE last summer, and it seals every bit as well as the RTV
goop. It took me some persuading to get the dealer to look up the TSB (they
typically seem to have the "I know everything and you don't" virus) but once
I did, they were able to get the part for me by the next day. If you want
the TSB number, I can find it for you in my garage at home, just email me.

I found the TSB on line using Google. Here's the info:

    DISCUSSION:

A reusable silicone gasket has been developed to replace the RTV method
of sealing the automatic transmission oil pan. Due to more frequent
Automatic Transmission Fluid (ATF) change intervals and the possibility
of the fluid foaming if it comes in contact with uncured RTV it is
recommended that this gasket be used in all applications.

NOTE: THIS GASKET CAN BE REUSED UP TO THREE (3) TIMES.

    PARTS REQUIRED:

    **1 05011113AA Gasket, Transmission Oil Pan, 31TH**
    **1 05011114AA Gasket, Transmission Oil Pan, 42LE**
    1 05011115AA Gasket, Transmission Oil Pan, 41TE/AE

This is where I say "Permatex 'The Right Stuff' brand". Its the only
thing I use for oil pans, tranny pans, valve covers, and other such
    things anymore.

    but
    Agreed.
