My 97 LHS started running hot (guage moving past 1/2 way - to the second
mark but not in the danger zone) on the way back from Florida.
So I changed the thermostat and the antifreeze which was 2 years old.
Now it is running cooler than normal - 1/2 the way down the the next line.

Will that cause any problems other than the heater not getting as hot or
    should I try another thermostat?

Also I changed the trans fluid a while back - bought a filter from chrysler
    and Carquest.
Both made by Filtran - the same manfacturer's name and markings - Carquest

My 96 Caravan, 3L, runs just under, or at, the mid-line. When it started running
too cool, it was a broken thermostat, which I replaced, and the temperature went
    back to normal.

Sometimes you can buy a bad thermostat. I've seen it where the wrong part is
in the box you buy. In other words it operates at a different temperature
range. If the engine is too cool the gas does not burn as efficiently, plus
you can get deposits built up.
