94 La baron Engine Dies While Driving

A few months ago my son was driving his 94 La baron on the turnpike when it
died on him at speed. He was able to restart it and continue. Over a period
of a week it did it 4 or 5 more times and then the problem went away.

Today it did it on me but this time it died every time I took my foot off
the accelerator. I had to drive with my foot on the gas keeping the RPM's
    around 1000.

I read the posts regarding the output speed sensor on the trans but I did
not have any fluctuation of the speedometer.

It has intermittent problems where it shudders as I accelerate. I think
    both problems are trans related.

I do not have a computer to check codes and I'v been unable to find a shop
    manual.

    Any suggestions would be appreciated.

    Thanks

    Frank

  2. You don't need a "computer to check codes".

    To check the computer codes:

With the engine off, switch the ignition key on-off-on-off-on,
    leaving it "ON". Do not
go to "start", just "on" during this procedure.

Watch the "Check Engine" or "Power Loss" light. It will turn on, then go
off, then will begin to flash-out any trouble codes that have been stored.
    For instance, if it flashes:

    flash <pause> flash flash
    <long pause>
flash flash flash <pause> flash flash flash flash flash
    <long pause>
flash flash flash flash flash <pause> flash flash flash flash flash

Then you have a 12 (one flash followed by two) a 35 (three and five) and a
55 (five and five). 55 means "end of codes" or, if by itself, "No codes
stored. Check the codes and report what you find.

This sounds a lot like my '89 Daytona Shelby, driving along one time and the
car just died. Turns out it was my ignition coil as Chrysler was nice enough
to position it on the passenger side wheel well in the engine compartment. I
guess the vibrations didn't do it well and it had had enough.

I checked the codes. The first was 12 and the second was 55.

I did it twice and it was the same both times.

BTW is there a seperate computer for the trans? If there is would those
    codes come up?

If the trans is computerized, then there is a separate computer for
it. In my van it is mounted on the firewall at the rear of the engine
compartment. There is a large cable harness connecting the computer to
    the trans.

And, no, those codes have to be read by a shop with the correct
    reader.

  7. No flash codes stored. That doesn't necessarily mean everything's OK with
the engine and its ancillaries; it simply means none of the monitored
    systems is setting a code.
Yes, on the RH side of the engine bay near the front.
No, those *do* need a scan tool.
