3.3 V6 - Defective Water Pump Damages Timing Cover

I've googled this problem, but no one else seems to have encountered
    it.

There was a little noise at idle, but I thought it was the idler
pulley/serpentine belt problem common to these engines.

The next thing I know, water is pouring out of the water pump, and,
upon disassembly, the bearing had seized, and broken a chunk out of
    the timing cover.

My mechanic says new covers from the dealer are $800 Canadian, and,
because they have them in stock, its probably a common problem. He
wants to try welding the damaged cover before buying a new one.

Anyone have a similar horror story?

No similar story, just a comment. This seems very odd. The water pump on
the 3.3 is mounted to the side of the engine. Also, CAN$800? Just for the
part? Wow! Perhaps you can find the part at a wrecking yard if the welding
    doesn't work out.
