2003 T&C downshift problem

    My 2003 Chrysler T&C has a noticeable abruptness to its 4th Gear to 3rd
    gear downshift. As the car decelerates to 30 MPH, the 4th to 3rd gear
    downshift takes place. But the downshift is not smooth. I have read that
    the valve body could be the root cause of this. I have the Chrysler Shop
    manual for the car and it details the removal and cleaning of the valve
    body. It doesn't look too difficult. However, I'm concerned about
    springs and whatnots that aren't detailed in the removal process. First
    , do you think the valve body is the culprit and two, are there any
    pitfalls in the removal and re-installation? Thanks for your help

    I've had the valve body on a Chrysler A413 apart a few times. What I
    can tell you is that you have to be careful. There *are* a lot of
    springs, pistons and other widgets which MUST be reassembled 100%
    correctly. The good news is that it is difficult to get something in
    the wrong bore; usually the bore sizes differ by quite a bit. The bad
    news is that it is easy to get the right part into the right bore the
    wrong way.

    No amount of "being careful" is really overboard with something as
    complex as this. If you're competent with stuff like this, you might
    get away with carefully lining up the parts on your (immaculately
    clean!) workbench as you disassemble, clean, and reassemble. If you
    have any doubts at all, you should take digital photos every step
    along the way as a hedge against confusion during later reassembly.
    One other technique I have used is to lay the parts out on a clean
    sheet of paper, and trace their outline with a pencil so I know what
    gets grouped together.
