Can anyone help with info here:

I have a 1996 Dodge Grand Caravan with roughly 70k miles. Two months
ago the transmission went and we took it to the local garage. They
put a "rebuilt" transmission in (took about a week). The transmission
would sometimes not shift from lower gear to freeway gear at about 50
mph the tac would go to 4000, 5000 and higher but no shifting. We
would have to stop the car, pull over and then turn it back on and it
usually would then shift until the next time it got a bug.

So we took it back--2 months 3 more transmissions, the last being a
new one and $2,600 later we now have a new transmission with the same
    problems.

Obviously it's something besides the transmission. Has anyone
    experienced this and have suggestions?

    Thanks,
    Scott

Any trouble codes from the transmission controller?

Almost sounds like a bad input or output sensor. Did they replace the
sensors, or transfer the old ones to the new transmission(s) each time?

Similar thought here. Mine was having similar symptoms. Transmission going
into limp mode occasionally for no apparent reason. Turning off and
restarting the engine (resetting the transmission electronics always fixed
(temporarily) the problem. Slowly getting worse, more frequent with time.
When I took it in, I was fully expecting a rebuild. The shop suggested first
replacing the solenoid pack - some of the codes suggested that could be a
problem. After some discussion of the problem, they assured me, if the
transmission did require rebuild, that they would deduct the cost of the
solenoid pack and its labour. They also indicated many shops do transfer
this pack over to the new transmission, unless they know there may also be a
fault with it. I guess it's one of those items like a starter or alternator
on a rebuilt engine, you transfer them over to the new unit unless there is
a reason or request not to do so. Ask if the solenoid pack has been
replaced, and the wiring to it checked out (another item my shop mention
would be worth checking before a rebuild, if the pack itself did not fix the
    problem.)

By the way, 3 months and no repeats.
