Based on year/model/symptom I will assume 4-speed electronic transmission.

First, have you checked the fluid level? Low fluid will definitely cause the
symptom you described (jerk as it finally kick down to first gear and then
    dropping into 'Limp-Mode'.

How many miles on vehicle and when was last fluid/filter change?

Was the fluid recently changed with the wrong fluid? If not or if original
fluid get it changed with right Chrysler stuff. What does the spedometer do
now. Could be a cheap repair, fluid change or serious problem. You need an
honest dealer to be sure. You might be able to enhance their honesty by
driving in and telling them your understanding is that it most likely is a
sensor. If you show some knowledge you might not get ripped off.

Classic symptom of speed sensor. Less than $20 part from the dealer.
20 minute job to replace by the first-time DIY'er (need to get under the
car to do it). Like Art says - depending on what your speedometer is
doing it could be either the input sensor or the output sensor. If
speedometer is behaving normally, then it's the input sensor. If
speedometer not working or behaving erratically, then it's the output
    sensor.

First thing i would do is try to verify that the correct AT fluid was used
    with no additives.
